Wheeler's Yard

In this era with no one posting their throwback photoshoots in front of the iconic blue garage doors of a cafe, I still hadn't visited Wheeler's Yard 😅, and finally I had, so let's start with some typical shots at the entrance.

Joanne and I had dinner there her sister and the boyfriend, thanks to his invitation and Burpple deal. We also seized the opportunity of dining out together, as it was 2 days before the updated COVID-19 measures for stabilisation phase taking effect from 27 September onwards, where dine-in is only allowed with group sizes of up to 2 fully vaccinated adults.

There's a BlueSG parking spot at 103 Jalan Rajah which is a 2-minute walk away from Wheeler's Yard, so I drove Joanne there on a BlueSG car. There's also a shortcut from the carpark where you walk along Whampoa River and enter from the back entrance of this bicycle workshop cum cafe.

The Burpple deal entitled us to choose from the following set at $24:

D'Star Bistro @ SUTD

D'Star Bistro @ SUTD Building 1

Deciding for dine out option is made easy with Burpple, that's how we found D'Star Bistro, offering 1-for-1 deals on Burpple.

D'Star Bistro is located on Level 1 of SUTD Building 1. This marked our first ever trip down to SUTD in Upper Changi.

The ambience was okay, except with two Chinese national students chatting loudly at the arm chair area that we had to change our seats.

Despite being located within the campus of an institute of higher learning, I find the food at D'Star Bistro relatively pricey. Even as a working adult, I doubt I'd come here again if there isn't a decent Burpple deal.

Mandarin Orchard Singapore

Level 26, Main Tower

Joanne's birthday and our anniversary are less than a week apart, we celebrated these two occasions somewhere in between these two dates with a one-night staycation at Mandarin Orchard Singapore, in conjunction with the September school holiday with Joanne's MOE special staycation promotion. We also added the Meritus Club Lounge access to our booking (it's only $50 for two guests, one of the best decisions we made).

As some areas were undergoing renovations at the time of our visit, Mandarin Orchard Singapore would be accessible only via the main entrance and the driveway of Mandarin Gallery. Also because of this, their reception and concierge were relocated to Level 8 of the Main Tower.

So we had to take the lift at Orchard Wing from the Mandarin Gallery main entrance to Level 5, transfer to the Main Tower lift lobby, then proceed to Level 8 for check-in at their reception and concierge.

Due to school holiday perhaps, there's a crowd at the reception, but managed well by the hotel reception team. Only one person is allowed to queue for check-in, so Joanne queued for it and I was escorted to a holding area, basically a meeting room. The "reception" at the reception was bad, and we hadn't got WiFi access there yet at the time of checking in.

The entire check-in process took an hour and Joanne was a bit disappointed with the hotel check-in systems as the receptionist wasn't even aware that we've added the Meritus Club Lounge access to our booking. But the receptionist was courteous and apologized for that.

Bookings of swimming pool and gym are made upon check-in, for a one-hour duration each. We didn't get to swim in the end because the only available slot is 1-2pm on the next day, which wasn't ideal as we've made other plans after checking out.

Chock Full Of Beans @ Changi Village

I took half day leave on Joanne's birthday, thinking of bringing her out to some random cafe in the east in the afternoon.

Located in Changi Village, Chock Full Of Beans lets you enjoy your coffee in an artistic way - their baristas create 3D latte art upon request (up to 30 minutes waiting time expected).

We ordered a glass of iced latte and requested for the 3D latte art of course. It's done in less than 10 minutes. Joanne couldn't figure what's the animal, when it's obviously a rhinoceros.

We ordered the Salmon Croquettes Benedict from their daily brunch menu. At $17, I feel that it's slightly pricey.

Watch out for the timing and weather before traveling there because it's freaking hot in the afternoon and it won't be enjoyable when it's pouring. A stroll at Changi Beach Park after a meal would be nice with good weather.
