Co-curricular Activities 2009/2010

These are the co-curricular activities (CCAs) that I joined in NUS and TH (Temasek Hall) in the academic year 2009/2010, which was my first year in the university.

NUS Chinese Orchestra 國大華樂團
NUSCO was the only university-wide CCA that I joined during that academic year.
It awards 11 points for performing member and 8 points for non-performing member.

I've spent a lot of time in this CCA as there're sectional practice every Thursday for 2 hours and combined practice every Saturday for 5 hours at CFA (Centre for the Arts).
I joined as an erhu player as a continuation from my role in my high school's Chinese orchestra. Most of the pieces we practiced were impressionistic, which I don't really enjoy playing.
It relatively seems to be a prestigious CCA to join, but in there, I don't feel the bonding like what I felt in my high school's Chinese orchestra, perhaps partly was due to my personality.

They held the annual concert (Quintessence 三月天・匯) at University Cultural Centre in the 2nd semester.

TH Dance
In the 1st semester, we practiced simple dance steps for just one item, choreographed by Yuzhen in a big group of people to perform for Temasek Hall Cultural Night 09/10 - NOISE.

It was a small scaled performance as the audiences were just hall residents - an internal one.
In the 2nd semester, there's a dance production (Incandescence) at NUS High School and 12 items were performed.
I was one of the choreographers who was in charge of a bboy item and check out the video on the right.

This was a bigger scaled one as it's external and the committee paid for all the expenses like transport and rental.
Hence we're not supposed to disappoint anyone but to put up a great show.

P/S: It's very stressful being a choreographer. Really...

I got 10 points and 1 demerit point because I withdrew from 2 items assigned to me due to study stress.

TH Production
TH Production is some kind like an English Drama Club, consisting of typical main committess and some sub-committees, like costumes, lights, music, and sets.

TH Production Music Sub Committee
I was a member of the Music Sub-Committee and what I did was trimming and processing the sound clips which were to be played during the play (Army Daze) in the 2nd semester.

I've even composed a marching music using my keyboard to be played during the dismissal.
I was only awarded 4 points, plus 1 bonus point as I made original music for the dismissal (not very original also, haha...).

TH Twisters
TH Twisters is a cheerleading squad. I joined gymnastics club during the first 2 years in high school and quitted after that. I really love doing gymnastics stunts so I joined TH Twisters as gymnastics is one of the cheerleading's components.

IHG Closing
We practiced very hard in the 1st semester for the performance during IHG (Inter-Hall Games) Closing in the 2nd semester.
Before each practice, we had to do various kinds of stretching, which are very torturing for normal human being. Each session is about 4-5 hours till midnight.
I enjoyed joining TH Twisters, at least there're some physical exercises for me besides arts and cultural CCAs.
I was awarded 8 points for this committee.

TH XinYao 心謠
TH XinYao is a Chinese pop band. I signed up as a keyboardist in the beginning, but ended up playing keyboard, guitar and bass guitar.
This is the committee I enjoyed the most as I compose and arrange Chinese pop songs.
TH XinYao consisted of 9 bands and each band practices one or two songs to be performed during internal concert, culture night, external concert and extra events.

Japanese 3 Skit Presentation

Skit Presentation was one of the CAs (Continual Assessments) for LAJ2202 Japanese 3.

We're tasked to create a couple of interview dialogues with some well-known characters in Japanese.

The video below shows the interview dialogues between me and my module-mate, Ding Wei Yung.

Best Instrumentalist (Freshie) Award

It was a cultural appreciation night of Temasek Hall, NUS. There're a few cultural committee in Temasek Hall like TH Twisters (Cheerleading Squad), TH Dance, THreshold (English band), TH XinYao (Chinese band). As one of the TH Dance and TH XinYao's members, I attended this event (partly just because of commitment [15%] and free supper [85%]!! Ngek ngek...).

As it's an appreciation night, to appreciate members' sincere commitment, awards like Best Dancer, Best Instrumentalist, Best Singer etc. are awarded.

I was lucky to be awarded a "Best Instrumentalists (Freshie) Award". Yeah (while I was wearing the TH Dance T-shirt anyway, haha...)!
[Freshie is aka Freshman, aka 1st Year]

A small trophy and a certificate were awarded by one of our hall's Block E resident fellows, Associate Professor Tay Seng Chuan

I appreciate for appreciating my efforts.
